Other businesses might require certifications and apprenticeships, such as electricians or plumbers.
Responsibilities
- Business owners oversee the day-to-day operations of the business along with office and management duties. Owners are responsible for hiring, firing and managing employees. Marketing, bookkeeping, payroll and advertising are primary business functions. Business owners must also keep abreast of their industry and keep up with or stay ahead of trends, methods and processes. The ability to forecast for budget purposes is necessary. Studying the industry market to know when new products should be introduced and old products should be retired is another important responsibility.
Experience
- A business owner must have experience in the business' specific industry. Practical experience working in his field prior to starting the business lends to the business owner's credibility and expertise in the field. General office experience is also a plus.
Skills Required
- Business owners have to be able to interact with many types of people, so effective communication skills are required. Management skills and the ability to delegate authority to subordinates are needed. Organizational skills are needed because a business owner will have multiple responsibilities. General office skills such as filing, typing, phone and computer skills are necessary for everyday business functions. The ability to identify and assess risk in the business industry is required. An entrepreneurial spirit is preferred, and excellent customer service and public relations skills are a must.
