Men of the Russian security services killed three alleged militants in a battle in the province of Dagestan in the North Caucasus, authorities said yesterday.

One of the victims was Mechtimpek Basirof, leader of an extremist organization in the city Ntermpent Caspian, according to a security source and Russian media claimed that the national counter-terrorism department.

In Dagestan, where majority are Muslims, unemployment is high and poverty widespread, ongoing Islamist insurgency a decade after the armed forces ousted the separatists from Chechnya.

The house where militants were hiding the two women who the authorities believe they were trained for suicide bombings. The den went to the police and Federal Security Service (FSB) after a company town Ntagkestanskige Ogkni, south of the provincial capital Machatskala, reported RIA news agency quoted anti-terror agency.

One of the women was killed and another hospitalized.

Interior Minister Rashid district Nourgkalief told the news agency Interfax that "today (yesterday) enterprise prevented possible serious terrorist attacks."

The extremists who operate in the North Caucasus have threatened to carry the violence in the heart of Russia ahead of presidential elections in March 2012.
